This outlines a select journey undertaken by 4 couples travelling together in June 2014. They chose some of the best possible hotels, travelled on a privately chartered barge along the famed Canal du Midi in southern France, and wrapped up the trip with a villa stay for 3 nights on the French Riviera. This comprehensive trip started in Paris, covered the Languedoc & Rousillon regions and ended along the French Riviera. Privately guided tours and private transfers were part of the program throughout.

This sample trip offers history, culture, food & wine.

  • “The rooms in the barge were small, as expected; the rest of the barge trip more than made up for it”
  • “Marseille is surprisingly nice and we could have used another day there, to spend a little more time on the waterfront and going through the museum. A free day (unguided) would be nice”.
  • “The barge trip was exceptional, one of the better adventures available. We had some nice hikes in Cassis up to the top of the 400m headland as well as along the Calanques”

Your private transfer takes you to your barge where you are welcomed aboard with champagne. Generally speaking, barges can carry on average from 8 to 12 or 16 people. Barges are fully refurbished, air-conditioned, and with en-suite cabins. Most have bicycles onboard and you can leave the barge at anytime to ride along the towpaths that parallel the canals, go for a walk, or perhaps visit a village. Or, just relax on the sundeck over a meal as you glide through France.

The Canal du Midi is a UNESCO World Heritage Site lined with towering plane trees. Highlights of this route include the medieval fortified town of Carcassone; olive tasting at the local press at L'Oulibo; the vibrant market town of Narbonne (built on Roman foundations); the old town of Agde with its Greek origins; the open waters of the Etang de Thau with its famous oyster beds, the distillery of Nlilly Prat Vermouth; pretty villages along the canal to explore with plenty of opportunity for walking and biking; and finally a friendly, attentive, English-speaking crew. A member of the crew - often the Captain - will guide you on a variety of walks and excursions during the week. Food is carefully prepared by a highly trained and talented chef and many comment that it is superior to any dining they do off the vessel! (Overnight: 6 nights on your barge hotel, B, L, D daily)[/su_spoiler]

Suggested time of year: This area is beautiful and less crowded in the spring and fall. Summer can be quite hot and more crowded in major cities, but it is still a great time to discover the region. August can be very crowded in some regions as this is vacation season for the locals as well.
