Brian Keating has been leading groups on nature-based adventures for over three decades, exploring some of the best wildlife areas on the Planet. An international speaker, author of five award-winning children's books, a weekly guest on CBC Radio, and former Adjunct Assistant Professor of Anthropology at the U of Calgary, Brian has also been a regular on the Discovery TV Channel, using his own wilderness adventure and wildlife films. He is also the co-producer of an exciting new series of programs: www.greatBIGnature.com .

Brian loves to share his knowledge and passion for all things wild, and with an avid following, his trips fill quickly!

We had spotted our first lions, and were traversing overland with our 4X4 Jeep, heading in the direction of the pride to get a closer look. We were vibrating with excitement. Suddenly, we came upon a leopard tortoise, an uncommon sighting, so we quickly stopped to pick up the basketball-sized reptile, placing him upside down on my lap, for later examination and photographs.

It was March 1983, and we were on our first African safari. That experience, and seeing our first elephants, first giraffes, first rhinos, and a vast variety of new birds, bonded us forever to Africa. We have been back to the continent over 60 times since then, running safaris into a dozen African countries. We just can’t get enough.

Our explorations inevitably led us to Rwanda, the nucleus of an exciting developing conservation effort. The “Mountain Gorilla Project” invited tourism as the financial “tool” to preserve the gorillas Dian Fossey made so famous. Spending time watching gorillas just being themselves is a profound privilege.

Dee and I invite you to join us on an incredible safari, into some of the best camps in the top nature locations of Kenya, followed by an excursion to hike in the Virunga Mountains and sit with wild gorillas.  – Brian Keating

Luxury Accommodation

We have hand selected these intimate camps for their locations, hospitality and ambience. Whether you are enjoying your sundowner cocktail, a gourmet meal or reminiscing around the campfire, you are in the heart of wilderness. Your private luxury tent is equipped with all the comforts.

Expert Guides

Our local guides have years of professional training and a deep passion for wildlife and conservation. They know the areas intimately and are skilled in finding even the “hard to spot” animals. Our host Brian Keating, with 60+ trips to Africa, will help facilitate an extraordinary experience.

Typical Day on Safari

At sunrise, tea/coffee and a snack is delivered to your tent, or it may be offered in the lounge area. Bring an extra layer for game drives in the cool morning hours. Return to camp for a hearty breakfast or brunch, followed by lunch or afternoon tea. During the hottest hours of the day, when animals are less active, you can retreat to your tent or room, or relax by the pool. Your afternoon activity will usually be a game drive into another area. As the sun sets return to camp where a hot shower and an enticing dinner await.

TWO trek permits to watch gorillas in the wild…double the excitement! After your daily gorilla treks, relax at the lodge with binoculars nearby, always be ready for nature’s entertainment. There will be opportunities to meet the locals and visit a school.

Getting Around

Top notch safari vehicles where everyone will receive a window seat for optimal viewing. In Kenya, we fly between camps to maximize your time and comfort.

Fly scheduled service from Nairobi to Kigali, where Civilized Adventures’ Rwanda team will be waiting for you. Air conditioned land cruisers will be your exclusive transportation in Rwanda.

Trip Difficulty

We rate this as “moderate to active”. With the various activities, including gorilla trekking, a good level of fitness will optimize your enjoyment of the trip. Some road travel is invariably over rougher terrain, especially on wildlife viewing excursions. Road conditions never stay the same from one trip to another it seems. Please remember that you are welcome to relax at camp instead of going on any given game drive. With early morning starts and optional activities occurring during the middle of the day, and knowing that it’s hard to pass up a game drive, your stamina may be tested!
